Apps performance testing key to enterprise mobile success

Workplace apps testing

IT professionals responsible for the operation of their enterprise mobile platforms must constantly monitor multiple facets of their infrastructure — including servers, storage, security and network efficiency — to ensure optimum performance.

Perhaps most important to the effectiveness of an enterprise mobile initiative is application performance. And that’s because mobile apps are the productivity tools used by workers to do their jobs. If their tools are inefficient or flawed, productivity will suffer, frustration will mount and employees simply will stop using those apps. Some will even turn to unauthorized third-party apps that could introduce security hazards.

Over at Gizmodo India, contributors Deepak Dua and Megha Sahni make a strong case for comprehensive  performance testing of mobile apps before deployment:

A rigorous [performance testing] plan will enable organisations to ensure that the app will function as intended on different devices with varying screen sizes, resolutions, internal hardware, and across diverse operators.

Indeed, they say, “performance should be the foremost consideration at every stage of the mobile development lifecycle.”

As you might expect, performance testing of mobile apps covers a lot of territory. Dua and Sahni recommend that enterprises initially focus on network capabilities, system integration and backend systems. Knowing what mobile apps are running on and across allows IT pros to understand the environment in which apps are performing.

More specifically, they write, apps performance testing should be done under anticipated peak loads, across geographies and with real users in order to gauge real-time results.
