5G will transform enterprise mobile

Some big changes to network speed and mobile applications are just around the corner, and enterprises would be wise to prepare.

So says a comprehensive annual report from enterprise consultancy Deloitte.

Perhaps the most significant development for enterprise mobile initiatives is the rollout of 5G, the fifth generation of cellular networks. Deloitte predicts “significant tangible steps toward the launch of 5G” in 2017, beginning with the availability of enhanced 4G networks that include many core components of 5G network technology.

Among the benefits of these components are “significantly higher speeds, lower latency, and support for low-power, low-bitrate Internet of Things (IoT) devices and sensors,” Deloitte writes.

While a wider launch of full 5G networks may not come until 2020 (just three years away), Deloitte said it believes a large number of smartphones already are “capable of exploiting these greater speeds.”

“By the time 5G launches around 2020, a significant proportion of users should have become accustomed to obtaining and expecting connectivity speeds of over 100 Mbit/s, and in some cases significantly higher,” the consultancy says.

To provide a frame of reference, the fastest 4G speeds typically are under 25 Mbit/s.

This is all good news, but enterprise IT pros need to start making sure their mobile infrastructure meets the speed requirements 5G will bring, so employees can benefit from these changes. It also means that enterprises should “start experimenting with new products and services based on higher speeds, greater capacity and a lower cost per gigabyte.”

Full 5G performance won’t come to every enterprise at once, but by being prepared to leverage the advantages of much faster network speed, organizations can hit the ground running once it arrives.
