The five enterprise archetypes: Which one are you?

Dramatic advances in technology have redefined the corporate workspace. Powerful and intuitive technologies are being put into the hands of more and more employees, making them more nimble and effective. Technology is finally empowering humans to better perform their jobs – which is the fundamental rationale for corporate IT in the first place.

The promise of digital transformation is clear, but the road there can be difficult. Businesses need proven leaders to help them on this journey. The research firm Information Services Group (ISG) recently published a report on this topic, taking a detailed look at the requirements of enterprises to meet the transformation challenge.

ISG broke out the requirements by identifying five categories of enterprises, which the report calls “archetypes.” These archetypes are:

  • Ad-Hoc: These enterprises usually have a legacy-heavy enterprise IT function that is siloed, disjointed and viewed as a cost center rather than a value generator
  • Transformation Oriented: These companies are adopting digital workplace initiatives to improve their service delivery and operational efficiencies.
  • Cloud-Enabled: These organizations are looking to adopt cloud-based technologies for any device, any time workplace delivery.
  • Digital: These companies are looking beyond BYOD and wish to provide digital technologies to distributed workers providing customer facing functions.
  • Next-Gen Sourcing: These organizations have experience outsourcing workspace services and are looking to transform for business differentiation.

Though these archetypes may differ in levels of complexity and IT integration, they all share a basic philosophy — that people, not devices, hold the key for successful workspace transformation. Technology’s role is to support and foster the connectivity and the collaboration needed for successful knowledge work.

The move to mobile and the growing population of millennials in the workforce each add urgency to the transformation journey. Gen Y and Gen Z have grown up amidst digital technology and are accustomed to having the right technology at their fingertips. The growth of this demographic and the rapid development of powerful user devices have combined to force BYOD policies onto IT staffs, along with a new focus on the employee experience.

The workplace of today is no longer defined by geography, a specific device or even a corporate VPN. The workplace is defined by the user, using whatever device and connectivity required to get the job done. This kind of flexible enablement will become increasingly vital for companies to continue to prosper. Those that don’t transform may well face an existential threat.

This post is the first in a series on defining best practices around modern workplace transformation.
