Automation speeds up the process of getting critical lab findings to clinicians

Diagnosing and treating babies and young children with serious illnesses places extraordinary pressure on clinicians, who want quick and accurate answers so they can take the next steps in the treatment protocol.

Currently, when babies with critical conditions are in the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU), tests are carried out and sent through the lab system for analysis. Typically, clinicians must wait for those results before they can make treatment decisions. But for these desperately sick children, treatment time and accuracy are of the essence.

The ability to proactively pick out critical lab results communicated from the lab system and escalate the findings to care teams via their mobile devices will help accelerate treatment and reduce variations in care. The notification process can be automated and visualized on a dashboard that provides a central command center ability to monitor and escalate these notifications for optimal care management. By automating the process, clinical team members don’t have to wait and watch out for results; instead, if something critical turns up, they are alerted immediately through care team-centric mobile engagement applications that require them to acknowledge receipt to ensure that the necessary treatment plan is quickly enacted.

If that acknowledgement isn’t received (after 10 minutes, say), the command center escalates the notifications, such as a call to the clinicians to ensure that they act urgently on the critical labs. Providing contextually intelligent notifications and escalations into the care team workflows makes it possible to minimize care variation.

Automating the workflow

Automating the workflow gives clinicians the peace of mind in knowing they will get the needed information quickly and automatically, and that a follow-up procedure will be put in place to ensure that nothing falls through the cracks. For the patients and their families, it means better, faster treatment.

This is truly cutting-edge technology. A few years ago, intelligent alerting and notification systems were not very common. But these technological breakthroughs mean more efficient and effective outcomes for patients. For healthcare systems and medical personnel, they mean the ability to reduce costs and enhance care through fewer system errors and delays.
