The jobs that AI creates

modern work desk

The current wave of artificial intelligence (AI) works by using computer models to simulate intelligent behavior. Machine-learning algorithms are good at learning new behaviors, but bad at identifying when those behaviors are harmful or don’t make sense.  Companies deploying AI will need a workforce trained to ensure that the technology remains both useful and safe.

AI at DXC: Artificial Intelligence is any program that does something that we would think of as intelligent in humans. AI is often based on machine learning and can produce unexpected results. (Click to enlarge.)

AI-aware leadership

AI must be customized to be useful. Companies will need people skilled at applying AI to a specific business context. AI-aware business leaders will build AI into the day-to-day operations of the company. AI-aware security leaders will build AI into threat detection and response.

AI training

Operational AI needs a workforce that can safely train algorithms. Companies will need people who can build training data that can teach AI the desired behavior. AI trainers will likely have deep domain knowledge and be adept at spotting and preventing errors or bias in data.

AI profiling

Businesses will need to protect against unintended consequences. Companies will need people trained to identify emerging vulnerabilities and safety and security threats. Profiling goes beyond making an algorithm “black box” more transparent. Profilers will anticipate future behavior by observing the intelligence that the AI learns over time.

AI-aware ethics and compliance

Companies will need to respond quickly if a problem occurs. Companies will need people trained to detect when the behavior of an AI device is not aligned with human values. It requires a workforce trained to monitor AI, quickly detect improper bias or unsafe behavior and respond with corrective action.

Beyond AI jobs and automation

The digital ideal is a company of people interacting with core systems. Most expect AI to automate the core system and eliminate people. But it’s more realistic to think of most companies as networks of people interacting with various digital systems. Realistically, AI exposes intelligence hidden in the systems and improves the way we interact. Rather than making people obsolete, I believe that AI will make the modern workplace smarter and more meaningful.

the value of artificial intelligence

The Value of AI: Many assume that the ideal use of AI is to automate a central system and reduce the need for people. The more realistic use of AI is to connect disparate systems and improve the way we interact with both machines and each other. (Click to enlarge.)

In the upcoming blog series, I will describe, by industry, how AI can transform everyday jobs from simply executing tasks into something much more valuable:
