Interview by Bruce Perry, Digital Marketing Intern

Nick Afzall is a rising junior at George Mason University. He is currently pursuing a degree in Business Management. As an intern with the Corporate Service team at DXC, he has worked on several exciting projects in various fields throughout the summer. Nick has a wide range of interests and believes DXC has given him a brand new outlook on what his professional future may hold.

What do you want to accomplish here at DXC?

I want to leave DXC on a high note. I want to be well respected by those I worked with and I hope they remember me as a hard worker with a positive attitude.

What was your most valuable internship experience and what did it teach you?

I think I’ve become a better team player while working here at DXC. Working here has taught me that you can accomplish so much more working in a group than working by yourself.

What are your best tips for thriving in your first corporate work environment?

You should always have a positive attitude. This is true if you want to thrive in any work environment , but especially in a corporate one. There are going to be times when you are stressed, but you should remain positive and always be ready to learn. Don’t think that you can’t do something. Remember that people are your best asset and don’t be afraid to ask questions.

What excites you the most about interning here at DXC?

The ability to gain experience in so many different fields. Having the ability to work on real estate projects, finance projects, and contracts in such a short period of time. I’m becoming more confident in my abilities. I’ve gained confidence in myself when it comes to public speaking, by speaking at large meetings.

How do you network at your job?

I try to meet as many people as possible. I try to speak to everyone that walks past me, even if I do not know them. I also try to learn an interesting fact about each person I meet. And it’s also a good idea to attend as many events and meetings as possible.

How do you stay organized and optimize your time in a flexible work environment?

I utilize a notebook to keep track of all my tasks. I try to minimize all distractions and stay on task. I do this by planning my day out and having a goal of what needs to be done for the week. This allows me to be stress free during the week. I never have to worry about missing a meeting or not meeting a deadline for my boss.

What are some things that interns should absolutely avoid?

As an intern, it is important to arrive early and dress professionally at all times. It shows that you are eager to learn and also shows respect to the company.
