Lessons learned as a DXC Labs intern

I vividly remember the morning of June 15th, 2018, when I first stepped into the office of DXC Labs, nervous, with butterflies in my stomach, and unsure of what the corporate world had in store for me. It was the first time that I had stepped out of my home and into an alien city, all alone. On my first day, I was assigned a task on blockchain technology, a field relatively new to me and I was apprehensive about how I would perform. But my fears were soon put to rest as I was greeted with smiling faces and a supportive team. Needless to say, the next six weeks at DXC Labs provided not just an amazing learning experience, but also a home away from home.

DXC’s work environment is distinct. The ambience is friendly and the working hours are flexible. I got an opportunity to work with highly qualified professionals in a relaxed atmosphere. Though they themselves had deadlines to meet, my superiors took time out to regularly discuss my work, provide valuable inputs and suggest improvements.

Here at DXC Labs, interns are treated like full-time employees. We attend the bi-weekly team meetings, where regular updates are taken from everyone present. The meetings offered a glimpse into the workings of a corporation and helped us bridge the gap between the theoretical knowledge of classrooms and its practical application.

The meetings also gave us a chance to showcase our skills. I was given an opportunity to make a small presentation on my research project related to cybersecurity. Towards the end of my internship, I also demonstrated the application of blockchain technology in business networks; both the presentations were very well received.

Each day at DXC Labs offered a unique learning experience. I was given access to the DXC University skills development and learning portal, and to DXC Labs’ own videos and presentations which opened up to me not only the world of blockchain technology but also artificial intelligence and quantum computing. Even coffee breaks and lunch breaks proved to be great interactive learning sessions.

Intern takeaways

But the work – meaningful as it was – was only a small part of what made my experience so special. My biggest takeaway would be the new long-term relationships I forged with my colleagues and fellow interns. Everyone I met at DXC Labs helped me grow as a professional and as an individual.

As my internship stint now draws to a close, I would like to say au revoir DXC and thank you for providing me an amazing platform to learn and grow. The famous lesson from Confucius aptly sums up my unforgettable experience:

“Tell me and I will forget,

Show me and I may remember

Involve me and I will understand”
