Optimizing transportation runs and customer experience

For many companies in the travel, transportation and hospitality industry, success is all about achieving the optimal result.  For example, optimize load balances to get passengers and cargo to their destination using less fuel and in the fastest time possible. Whether in the air or on the ground, it’s all about minimizing the cost while maximizing the experience.

That’s why an intermodal perspective is so important. Today, cargo tends to travel from truck to train, to ship, to train, to truck — or some combination thereof. People jump from car to train to bus to airport. Intermodal integration and a full view of the supply chain are essential factors in today’s travel landscape; companies must adopt a strategy that embraces this intermodal view.

A connected transportation platform not only optimizes intermodal runs but adds a customer-oriented layer to incorporate elements that impact the travel experience. For example, optimization based on traveler preferences during airline ticket reaccommodation would include features of the previous flight, such as contiguous family seating, or maintaining a preferred level of hotel room in the event of a venue change.

An enhanced and seamless experience

Every vendor in the travel ecosystem can offer travelers an enhanced experience. When your arrival time and gate change, the coffee vendor who prepares your favorite blend can be notified beforehand to have your brew standing by hot and fresh at the new location when you deplane after an overnight flight.

Partnering with third-party providers is essential to gaining a wider perspective and better context. For example, sensors embedded in cargo and exposed through tracking APIs ensure that temperature and other conditions are maintained throughout different modes of a cargo’s journey.  It may also mean using smart devices in the field, combined with analytics in the cloud, to monitor and manage physical objects and provide predictive maintenance to keep flights departing on time.

Any way you measure it, the added context and transaction visibility provided by a connected transportation platform will help companies meet the growing expectations of travelers and shippers who want a seamless experience.
