Not just great tech jobs, but great tech careers

There are a lot of good, high-paying technology jobs out there, and the number continues to grow — even as artificial intelligence (AI), machine learning, robotics, and automation are taking over an increasing number of workplace responsibilities previously handled exclusively by humans.

But jobs come and go. More important is that people are able to chart a career path that leads to personal and professional growth and economic prosperity.

Job site Glassdoor recently analyzed millions of employee reviews to compile a list of 25 jobs in the U.S. with the most promising career opportunities. And the results should be quite encouraging for current and aspiring technology professionals.

“Almost half of these jobs with bright futures are tech positions,” writes Glassdoor’s Amanda Stansell.

OK, before we get to the results, let’s talk Glassdoor’s methodology. Here’s the criteria used:

Career Opportunities Rating: The career opportunities rating (on a scale of 1.0=weak to 5.0=strong) reported by actual employees working in these roles on Glassdoor over the past year (7/1/18-6/30/19).

Salary: The median base salary reported on Glassdoor over the past year (7/1/18-6/30/19) is $80,000 or higher.

Job Openings: The number of U.S.-based open job openings on Glassdoor as of 7/5/19 is at least 2,000.

To provide some perspective, the highest career opportunity rating on the list is 4.1 (three companies were tied for the top spot) and the Glassdoor average rating for a specific job is 3.0.

Enough chitchat! Here are the tech jobs that made the top 25, including their overall rating and median base salary. (You can see how many openings there are on Glassdoor for each job in the link above.)

2) 4.1 — Salesforce developer ($81,721)

3) 4.1 — Product designer ($102,054)

7) 3.9 — Data scientist ($110,160)

9) 3.9 — Java developer ($82,087)

12) 3.8 — Mobile developer ($94,555)

13) 3.8 — DevOps engineer ($107,619)

16) 3.8 — Data engineer ($101,527)

17) 3.8 — Scrum master ($97,771)

23) 3.7 — Solutions architech ($130,595)

24) 3.7 — QA manager ($91,660)

25) 3.6 — Software development engineer ($117,250)

In case you’re wondering, the job ranked at the top by Glassdoor (even though it tied two other positions with a 4.1 ranking) is tax manager (median base salary of $112,021), while the job with the highest median base salary (and ranked No. 4 with a 4.0 rating) is strategy manager ($142,328).

Bottom line: For talented and ambitious technology pros, opportunities abound.
